Animal Welfare Statutes
Laws that protect animal welfare are almost non-existent on a Federal level. The most notable federal law for animal welfare is the Animal Welfare Act, which only protects animals that have direct contact with humans such as animals in circuses, zoos, and those that are owned or research or testing. Farms, pet stores and hobby breeders are not covered in the act.
The Humane Slaughter Act only protects the animal of the time of slaughter, but it isn't concerned with the treatment of the animal before its death. This act is limitedly enforced because of the over 9 billion of animals that are slaughtered annually. 95% of these slaughtered animals are chickens which are not covered by the act because they are not mammals and therefore not considered animals.
Factory farms convinced states to add common factory exceptions (CFE’s) to make legal animal abuse. This justified the way animals are treated. They are more concerned with their own benefits rather than the animal’s welfare. New Jersey public organizations, including ones for food safety and animal cruelty, challenged these CFE amendments saying they were inhumane and unreasonable; courts agreed. The New Jersey Supreme Court said that this argument wouldn’t hold up in any other states because humane treatment isn’t required.
In states that do have anti-cruelty laws, that do not contain CFEs, enforcement is rare. Local governments are the only ones who can enforce these laws, but due to limited resources and priorities of animal welfare cases, little enforcement and few prosecutions is actually done.

Human and animal life to the CAFO system is considered “expendable”, willing to be sacrificed in order to achieve an objective. This is easily observed through the ways they treat their animals, consumers and the environment. The animals suffer because they are arranged as a product instead of a being for this organization. But the animals aren’t the only ones who suffer from this CAFO operation humans and the environment suffers too. Humans are exposed to danger diseases from consuming CAFO products. The environment is destroyed from CAFO callous operational methods. This organization is set up in a way that nothing besides products which yield financial gain matters.
Animals are treated as objects instead of beings by CAFO structure. They genetically breed and produce animals with artificial insemination, eliminating the entire natural reproduction process. They are tortured by the workers from birth to death with tactics such as mutilation. They have their tails cut off, testicles cut out, breaks seared off, all without anesthesia. Animals are fed corn, chicken manure, same species and other materials which they cannot digest. This causes liver failure within the animals and pain. CAFO respond by giving the animals antibiotics in order to survive and be healthy. These animals are suffering because they are a product to this profit driven system called CAFO. But they pain isn’t only felt by them it spills over to humans who eat the products.
Consumers are constantly at risk of contracting food borne illness when they consume products from the CAFO system. We are exposed to E.Coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and countless other diseases that procreate at these factories. The factories try to minimize the toxic food threat to humans by loading the certain meat up with chemicals. They use a chemical known as ammonia to decontaminate the meat. The chemicals stop the short term issue of some deadly diseases but they may harm people in the long term. The intake of these ammonia filled products can be fatal. The liver automatically converts ammonia to urea in the body. The problem comes when the liver is no longer able to make the conversions. The high ammonia levels in the blood can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis, and hepatitis. This fact is hidden from most consumers; manufactures aren’t required by the FDA to put it on the labels. Apparently the CAFO system isn’t concerned either because they choose not to inform their consumers.
Destruction to the environment from the CAFO system is monstrous. Their operations consist of having thousands of animals in a space that can only support hundreds. They use lagoons to store livestock manure, lagoons are tanks made from concrete and steel. Lagoons have spill sometimes. The spillage from the lagoons leads to water contamination that poses health threats to humans. The lagoons also emit odorous gases. The gases produce symptoms in humans like nausea, headaches, irritated eyes and throats. They also cause health hazards like asthma and other airborne sicknesses. Livestock waste also contributes to global warming; it may influence the nitrogen deposition because of the ammonia released from the lagoons to the atmosphere. The results from global warming will be temperate rising, melting of the polar ice caps and dissipating cities due to the flooding.

The connections we made from each other's keywords were, with the creation of this large (CAFO) industry with the help of machines bought on destruction to the environment. Their lack of care for how they got rid of the toxic waste caused pollution and destruction to the ecosystems.It also causes people to become sick,sick from the toxic waste that infected humans water system brought on by CAFO elimination process of animal manure. CAFO's treatment of animals (cattle) also spread diseases, they feed animals things like animal manure, dead animals (cats & dogs) corn and grains. The disillusion of Old McDonald had A Farm
Factory farms, hatcheries and slaughter houses consistently use inhumane methods to bring meat to our tables. As I viewed the YouTube video, Farm to Fridge I couldn’t help but to feel sympathy for the animals. Watching male chick’s only minutes old being tossed into a grinder was almost as disturbing as watching piglets being slammed to the ground head first. Listening to the tormented screams of pigs having their genitals tore from their bodies is a frightening image I will soon not forget. The branding of the cows without any pain medication is unbearable to watch. All three animals (pig, chicken, and cow) are being tortured for the sole purpose of a bacon egg and cheese sandwich.
All this unnecessary harm being bought to these animals makes you wonder how the humans who inflict the pain do it. I witnessed the animals suffering through my computer screen as I watched on in horror. How is it that these workers are able to physically bring on the pain to the animals and not feel any remorse? It could be a matter of disconnect, these people feel no connections to the animals. They see them as objects and nothing more. But for other people who don’t get to work with the animals we receive our food from, we simply don’t know or are unaware of the pain they are subjected to.
This video connects to my project because it proves our mission statement why people should go organic. Organic farmers use humane tactics for the slaughter of animals. I believe if more people would see this alarming video it would have a greater impact than simply reading about it. Sometimes it takes a visual cue for people to feel a connection.
